| The collision of my interests that is Painters Painting is remarkable in a number of ways. It's about my two favorite modes of American Art - Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art. The film is directed by the great Emile de Antonio, but the cinematographer was my hero, Ed Emshwiller. The No documentary, before or after, has so precisely captured its topic within its realm. Static Art and Film Art are closely related, and here they play back and forth, but the power of this documentary is in the interviews. The talking heads in those interviews are framed with the precision of an artist attempting to capture a moment on canvas. It is very much in line with the idea of Abstract Expressionism that it is the painter painting that is the key, and not the painting that is produced, and as such, these interviews are less about content than they are about the context in which they are created. It also shows just how big an ass Robert Rauschenberg was, but I think we all knew that. |
